In our latest Santa Monica Pulse Poll, we asked about the recently approved development of a 122-unit apartment building for the homeless. It will cost more than $1 million per unit, making it one of the most expensive affordable housing projects in the nation. Located at the former site of Parking Structure 3 Downtown, the project will be financed with Federal, State and County funding, loans, tax credits and tax-exempt bonds. We asked residents if they supported the construction of this affordable housing project. About 83 percent said no. Only 12 percent said yes, and another four percent said they weren’t sure.
A Superior Court judge found a California law allowing multi-family buildings on single-family lots was unconstitutional. The law, known as SB 9, allows lots zoned for a single-family home to be split into two lots with two homes each without requiring a public process. When asked if they supported the court’s decision, 52 percent said yes. 34 percent said no, and 14 percent were unsure.
900,000 signatures have been collected for the Homelessness, Drug Addiction, and Theft Reduction Act to qualify for the November General Election ballot. The ballot measure would increase penalties from crimes related to drugs or theft. When asked how they would vote if the measure were on the ballot tomorrow, 80 percent said they would vote in favor. Only eight percent said they would vote against and another 11 percent were unsure.
