Last year, the Santa Monica City Council updated its anti-camping ordinance to include a ban on the outdoor use of sleeping bags and bedrolls. The new Council has recently moved to undo this ban, alleging that it is “inhospitable” to the homeless. In our latest Santa Monica Pulse poll, we asked residents if they supported the council’s move to weaken Santa Monica’s anti-camping ordinance. 87 percent said no, they did not support the Council’s move. Only about nine percent said yes, and another three percent were unsure.
We also asked residents about a recent report that found Santa Monica had one of the highest property crime rates in the country based on FBI crime data. When asked if they thought the current City Council was doing enough to reduce crime in Santa Monica, and overwhelming 93 percent said no. Only one percent said yes, and five percent were unsure.
There has been a recent push to include affordable housing in the plan for future use of the Santa Monica Airport land. Advocates say housing can be built alongside the “Great Park” that is slated for the land. Opponents argue there are other areas to build housing in Santa Monica. We asked residents if they supported including affordable housing on the airport land. 78 percent said no, while 10 percent said yes. Another 11 percent were unsure.
