Santa Monica Pulse November 2023

Our latest Santa Monica Pulse polling asked residents to weigh in on some of the latest decisions coming from City Hall as well as the LA City Council. First up, we asked residents about the Council’s recent decision to endorse Proposition 1, a state ballot initiative set for a vote in March 2024. Proponents say it would reallocate billions of dollars to help homeless Californians and those struggling with substance use. Opponents say the measure will only throw more money at a more nuanced issue.

Knowing this, we asked residents if they would vote in favor of Proposition 1. Only 19 percent said yes. Half (50 percent) said no, and another 31 percent were unsure.

We also asked residents to weigh in on the Santa Monica Police Reform Commission’s recent re-vote on a report that recommends police officers state the reason for all traffic and pedestrian stops on body-worn video (BWV). When asked if they believed the city should adopt such a policy, 55 percent said yes. 30 percent said no, and another 14 percent said they weren’t sure.

This week, the LA City Council approved the Responsible Hotel Ordinance — a law that would allow hotels to voluntarily house the homeless, along with other requirements. This law will replace the measure intended for the March 2024 ballot that would have forced hotels to house the homeless. When asked if they support this new approach where housing the homeless is voluntary instead of forced, 65 percent of residents said yes. 22 percent said no, and another 12 percent said they weren’t sure.
